After a pandemic-prompted redesign for a digital screening, The Sea Between My Soul will finally premier as originally intended: live on the main stage of Onassis Stegi in Athens. In this multi-sensorial performance, taxidermy animals narrate the ominous story of the Mediterranean Sea as a stage of darkness and death throughout human history.

#ABOUT

Placed on an elaborate scenic set, the actors (multiple taxidermy animals) use lyrical folk songs in the form of a cacophonous rock musical to tell their story. Much like they are seen in the displays of natural history museums, a drama unfolds through the animals’ silent bodies by simply hinting a voice or action is generated by them. In this way, the animals’ gratuitous ‘death on display’ is erased through the illustration of life.

Avant-garde rock musician Alan Bishop lends his voice to the performance, helping to resurrect these animals from an unknown past, as they chronicle their fatal journey, speaking from a dimension beyond the one we know. As the creator Raed Yassin writes, “Removed from their natural habitat and displaced into an urban landscape somewhere by the sea, their appearance in this way somehow predicts the current dark moment of our times.”

Raed Yassin (1979, Beirut) is an artist and musician who graduated from the theatre department at the Institute of Fine Arts in Beirut in 2003. Since then, he has developed his artistic practice through various mediums such as video, sound, photography, text, sculpture and performance. Yassin’s work often emerges from an examination of his personal narratives and their position within a collective history, seen through the lens of mass consumer culture. Yassin was a

resident artist with numerous organisations, such as De Ateliers in Amsterdam (2008-2010), the Delfina Foundation in London (2010 & 2014) and the Akademie der Künste der Welt in Cologne (2015).
