#ABOUT

Under the supervision of the architect and museologist Erato Koutsoudakis, the Raw Museum – also known as Mystery_29 – aims to interpret the city of Eleusis by creating a journey to the core of its existence. The Raw Museum draws from antiquity and modernity, tradition and change, from the city’s relationship to the arts and ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus to the harsh reality of contemporary working life. In this way the Raw Museum presents a unique journey through the mysteries and uniqueness of a city that provides a reference point for Greek history – visible and invisible.

The design of the Raw Museum is based in the idea of three levels or perspectives. The first follows the logic of the cabinets of curiosities of the Italian Renaissance, honoring the Eleusinian collectors of old and the care they took to document their city. Unique documents from the Benaki Museum’s collection are made available to the public for the first time.

The second level is home to a series of ‘talking portraits’, prominent figures from the local society, whose lives are inextricably connected to the city. With the help of their personal lived experiences and memories, they serve to guide visitors through the exhibition.

The third and final level showcases historical impressions of Eleusis: lithographs from the 18th and 19th centuries, stories from residents and their personal collections and records of the great thinkers, writers and poets who visited the city. Juxtaposing the writing of the world’s intellectuals with the memories of the city’s inhabitants, the Raw Museum highlights the modern and ancient mysteries of this ancient and once sacred place.
