DESCRIPTION

A live music performance and 15 video-art creations constitute the first presentation of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's work "Caprichos de Goya", based on the homonymous etching series by Spanish painter Francisco Goya.
The sleep of reason produces monsters.
Francisco Goya, Capricho No. 43

The solo guitar work Caprichos de Goya op. 195 (1961) by the Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1896-1968) is a musical composition inspired by the homonymous etching series by Spanish painter Francisco Goya (1746-1828) and will be presented for the first time in Greece by the Greek guitarist Nikos Zarkos. Through the 80 etchings that were released on February 6th 1799, the dark fantasy world of the painter is expressed, and his wild, sarcastic, violent and cynical visions find their form. Castelnuovo-Telesco transforms the visual work into music, using forms that were common in the Spanish court of the time, showcasing the enigmatic nature and ambiguity of Caprichos.

Celebrating the first presentation of the work in Greece by guitarist Nikos Zarkos, nine video artists created works that will accompany the live performance, in an attempt to develop an innovative dialogue between music and visual works. Within a narrative referencing the thematic spectrum of the etching series, the new videos explore conceptual and aesthetic connections between the two creations and reexamine the timeless subjects of Caprichos.

Video Artists:

Nassia Kalamaki, Athina Georgia Koumela, Myrsini Nikou, Natalia Papadopoulou, Dionysis Pappas, Evi Stamou, Maria Schina, Magia Galatia Tapinou, Konstantina Forou

The event commemorates both the 190th anniversary of Francisco Goya’s death and the 50th anniversary of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s death and is a co-production of the Italian Cultural Institute, the Cervantes Institute, powered by Delta Pi.
The presentation is accompanied by an exhibition of copies of the etching series by Goya, kindly granted by the National Gallery-Alexandros Soutsos Museum.
